an american treasure, opera singer, recitalist and performer of contemporary music. born in augusta georgia 1945. her family were amateur musicians encouraging her early to music training. at 24 she won a international music competition in munich, and landed a 3 year contract with deutsche opera berlin. in opera, as a dramatic soprano, she specializes in wagnerian heroine roles. later in life she moved to recitals and concerts. 2010 obama presented her with national medal of arts adding to her many awards.
