american film and stage actress, considered one of the great beauties of her day. born into a prosperous family in new york 1920, she was educated at fine schools including two years at the brillantmont international school in lausanne, switzerland. she was protege of broadway producer-director george abbott in the late 1930s. she started her film career in 1940s in 'heaven can wait' directed by ernst lubitsch. she had a romance with prince aly khan and was married to the fashion designer oleg cassini, and later to a texan oil baron. she suffered from depression. died 1991, emphysema, age 70.
