austrian-born american filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, artist and journalist, whose career spanned fifty years and sixty films. he was born into a jewish family. after the rise of the nazi party he moved to Paris and in 1933 to hollywood working as a screen writer with his first success 'ninotchka' in 1939 with fellow german immigrant ernst lubitsch. he won academy award as producer, director and screenwriter of 'the apartment' 1960. 1906-2002.
